The “Celebrating the Girl I Am” Workshop was Awesome!

This past weekend, Afro Puffs and Ponytails, Inc held a workshop in the small rural town of Thomson, GA at the  Thomson Depot Annex.  We had a wonderful time.  Although we did not have the turnout that we expected, the girls who were  in attendance were a pleasant hand full!  There were a total of 16 in attendance and we were very thankful to have them join us.

The workshop began with an introductory icebreaker.  We spoke to the girls about the importance of accepting themselves. The discussion was quite interesting.  The book, “I like Myself” was read to the girls and they were given the opportunity to create their very own book entitled I like myself. The girls were so creative, and some of them even read their book to the group.  We had a girl circle rap session which allowed every girl a chance to speak and to be heard.  The girl circle also gives the girls a chance to receive positive feedback from the girls who may be experiencing similar issues.  This part of the workshop lasted longer than we expected as the girls had plenty to say!

They enjoyed lunch, made posters centered around our theme, and some of the girls enjoyed the spa treatment! Yes, the workshop was for the girls, but there is so much that we as adults can learn from pre-teen and teen ladies. We are glad we had the opportunity to work with the girls there in Thomson, and we hope to have another chance to reach more of them in the near future!

The workshop was made possible by some very generous Sponsors. Afro Puffs and Ponytails is very thankful for their support!

The work that you did with those who attended your workshop was an awesome. Be encouraged! Our agency hosted a mini-conference for middle school girls just two weeks ago and we, too, didnt get the turnout that we had hoped for but the results have been fantastic. Great Job!
